General Assistance Medical Care Weekly Report
Days until GAMC is eliminated: 78
Minnesota's recent bitterly cold weather is a sharp reminder of the vital role our safety net hospitals play throughout the state. Last year, Regions Hospital's emergency department treated more than 400 patients for ice and cold-related trauma. Overall, the emergency department saw patients from 76 of Minnesota's 87 counties, often providing life-saving care in its capacity as a Level 1 trauma center. When a state-wide resource has to absorb major cuts like the loss of GAMC, all of Minnesota's citizens feel the impact.
Story of the week: Deb, age 61*
After eight months of successful treatment for melanoma, Deb is receiving follow-up care at Regions' Cancer Care Center. With her follow-up visits covered by GAMC, she can continue her recovery without the additional stress that comes with not having health insurance. Without GAMC, she would struggle to pay for her skin exams and might not be as inclined to complete them.
